After a period of millions of years, Dr. Heywood Floyd, the Chairman of the United States National Council of Astronautics, makes his way to Clavius Base, an outpost located on the moon belonging to the United States. To get to the monolith, he and the other people take a moonbus. They are looking at the thing when it gets hit by sunlight, which causes it to send out a powerful radio signal.
