This monolith teaches them how to make use of a bone as a weapon, and when they have completed their first hunt, they return to drive their competitors away using the newly discovered instrument.

After a period of millions of years, Dr. Heywood Floyd, the Chairman of the United States National Council of Astronautics, makes his way to Clavius Base, an outpost located on the moon belonging to the United States. During his stay at Space Station 5, he has a meeting with a group of Russian scientists who express concern over the fact that Clavius does not appear to be responding. He would not address the rumors that the base is experiencing an outbreak.

At Clavius, Heywood addresses a gathering of staff members, during which he emphasizes the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding their most recent findings. His objective is to do research on a recently discovered artifact, which is a monolith that was buried exactly the same way four million years ago near the lunar crater Tycho. To get to the monolith, he and the other people take a moonbus. They are looking at the thing when it gets hit by sunlight, which causes it to send out a powerful radio signal. This happens while they are looking at it.
