Those Who Are Cast Away (2006) In the year 1966, someplace in Russia, a mother who has been injured drives a truck to a remote farm with her two infant children.

Forty years later, the film producer Marie Jones abandons her daughter in the state of California and embarks on a journey through the uncharted tundra of Russia to return to her birthplace.

Marie, one of the children, was the recipient of a phone call from Andrei Misharin, the notary public, who informed her of the location of the farm that her family owns and operates.

When Marie arrives at the abandoned house, she is greeted by a stranger by the name of Nicolai. Nicolai reveals to Marie that he, too, had received a call from Misharin and that he is her twin brother.

Strange occurrences take place within the home, and both Marie and Nicolai report seeing spectral versions of themselves that resemble zombies. They also discover that they are unable to exit the house because they are unable to escape the location.

5: The Night House (2021)

An effective old-fashioned ghost story that reveals inconceivable facts after a tragic loss is "The Night House," which stars the always wonderful Rebecca Hall as the central character. It's a pretty impressive mood generator, the kind of movie that wants you to feel unsettled from very nearly its first frame all the way to its final one, and it basically gets that job done. It owes more to films like "Carnival of Souls" and "The Innocents" than to most current…

10: The Eyes Of My Mother (2016)

The arthouse horror film "The Eyes of My Mother" purposefully alienates its audience by depicting events in the life of a woman from perspective that is beyond human and more akin to that of God. Sometimes. Usually. Probably? In general, writer and director Nicolas Pesce loves black-and-white long takes and static camera compositions. This is a distinctive style that quickly confronts viewers with its false point-of-view because of the lengthy takes and the static camera compositions. You don't see Francisca…

11: Goodnight Mommy

"Goodnight Mommy," an Austrian film that was produced in 2014 and was imported from Austria by Veronica Franz and Severin Fiala, was a sinister and uncomfortably effective piece that took one of the most basic fears—that the people that we know and love have been somehow replaced—and filtered it through an examination of societal belief in an unbreakable bond between a mother and her children that took things to often gruesome extremes. The fear that the people that we know…
