Anas Nin is living in Paris, France, in 1931, and although she has a secure relationship with her husband Hugo, she feels as though she is missing something in her life. When Nin first comes into contact with Henry Miller, he is in the process of writing his first novel.

Nin is captivated by Miller and his wife June, as well as by the free-spirited way of life that they live. Nin gets entangled in the troubled relationship that the couple is going through and has an affair with Miller while simultaneously trying to pursue June.
