Robert “Gar” Gartland, a student at Riverton, Indiana, is seventeen years old and a huge fan of the Riverton Giants, the basketball team that represents his school. Haley Joel Osment plays Gartland. Matt Morrison, who is played by Ryan Merriman, is his best buddy and the star player for the Riverton Giants. Things do not go according to plan when Matt forces Robert to take part in the heist of a small-time drug dealer. As a result, Robert is faced with the challenge of rescuing the team from a hopeless situation, with the state title and Matt’s future on the line.

High school basketball is practically a religion in the state of Indiana. This devotion is used as a setting for a novel that examines the effects of peer pressure, the value of different points of view, and the distinction between a friend and a hero. Gar is under the impression that Matt can do no wrong. Gar finds himself falling in love with Bridgette, an outsider who does not embrace the superstar status granted to basketball players in her new hometown. At the same time as he supports and encourages the antics of his best friend, Gar finds that he is falling in love with Bridgette. Gar comes to terms with his incorrect belief and gains a new degree of awareness about himself and his hometown as the story progresses from high school parties, pep rallies, and Hoosier mania to robbing a drug dealer, being chased and blackmailed, disobeying a hero, and confronting his foes.
