Johnny Truelove, a young man living in the San Gabriel Valley in the year 1999, is involved in the drug trade. Johnny distributes the marijuana that his father, Sonny, gives him to sell with the help of his crew of associates, which includes Frankie Ballenbacher, Johnny’s right-hand man; Tiko Martinez, the group’s muscle; Elvis Schmidt, who is mocked for being in debt to Johnny; and Jake Mazursky, an addict who is also in debt with Johnny.

His father, the Sonny, is the source of the marijuana. Jake makes an attempt to borrow money from his father and stepmother, while his younger half-brother Zack looks up to Jake as a role model and yearns to get away from his family and their existence. When Jake attempts to repay Johnny for only a portion of their debt, they get into a fight, which ultimately results in Johnny getting Jake fired, which prompts Jake to take revenge by breaking into Johnny’s apartment. Johnny brings Frankie and Tiko to meet Jake, but Jake cannot be located anywhere in the vicinity.

Johnny made a hasty decision to give the gang an order to kidnap Zack after stumbling into him on the side of the road. He intended to keep Zack hostage until Jake settled his debt. Zack is desperate for a change from his routine at home, so he makes no attempt to flee, and the two of them drive to Palm Springs. Frankie is the one who is left to watch Zack, and he gives him the opportunity to leave, but Zack does not take it since he does not want to make things difficult for his brother.
