A group of firemen and police officers break down the door of an apartment in a Paris apartment building after residents of the building complain about a smell coming from one of the apartments. Inside, they find the body of Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), who was lying on a bed and was decorated with cut flowers.

Anne and her husband Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant), both retired piano professors in their seventies, go to a performance by one of Anne’s former students named Alexandre several months before the opening scene. When they got back, they discovered that someone had attempted to break into their apartment but was unable to do so. The following morning, while they are all sitting down for breakfast, Anne suffers a stroke in complete silence.

She is completely unresponsive to Georges as she sits there in a catatonic state. She comes to just as Georges is about to get aid, but she is unaware that a stroke has taken place in the meanwhile. Until Anne realizes that she is unable to pour a cup for herself, Georges is unsuccessful in his attempts to convince her to seek medical assistance.

After undergoing surgery to unblock her carotid artery, Anne discovers that the procedure was unsuccessful, and as a result, she is confined to a wheelchair and unable to move her right side. She obtains a pledge from Georges that he will not readmit her to the hospital or place her in a nursing home. Georges takes on the role of Anne’s responsible, if occasionally aggravated, caretaker. One day, after what appears to have been an unsuccessful attempt to end her life by jumping out of a window, Anne informs Georges that she doesn’t want to continue living.
