On an interplanetary rescue mission, the only survivor is looking for the only survivor of a previous expedition. He stumbles upon a world controlled by apes and an underground metropolis populated by humans who are capable of communicating via telepathy, among other discoveries.

On a mission to find a fellow American astronaut who has gone missing, Brent is an American astronaut. In the year 3955, the search and rescue team follows Taylor’s known flight path and crashes on an unknown planet, leaving Brent as the sole survivor. On his arrival back on Earth in the present day, like Taylor did before him, he is unaware that this is in the future, and in the neighbourhood of what used to be New York City. It appears that Taylor has walked the Earth. A barbarous, English-speaking race of apes rule the globe, and their goal is to kill the human race in part.

There are some people who connect telepathically and live underground to avoid detection by the apes. Brent eventually finds some of them. Humans, who are as barbarous as the apes in their own way, are trying to save their own species. If the two major species on this planet are at war, Brent will have to devise a strategy to defend himself under these circumstances, which may prove more difficult.
