A little boy by the name of Sean Donovan resides in the home of his mother and his father, an abusive drinker. During the night, a carjacker assaults his family, which ultimately leads in the death of his mother. After that, his father Terry uproots the family and relocates them to a more desirable location.

After ten years, Sean is still a brilliant student, but he has become antisocial and isolated from his contemporaries. He hears abuse in the conflicts that his friends and family have on a regular basis. He gets training in several forms of self-defense and starts carrying a weapon around with him at night.
