Charlie St. Cloud and his younger brother Sam take first place in a boating event aboard Charlie’s sailboat, Splendid Splinter. As a result of their victory, Charlie is awarded a sailing scholarship to attend Stanford University. After he has graduated from Winslow High School, Charlie makes a vow to Sam that they will continue to play baseball together every day up to the time that Sam leaves for Stanford.

On the evening in question, Charlie really wants to celebrate his graduation with his friends at a party, but his mother is making him watch Sam instead. Sam catches Charlie as he is attempting to sneak out of the house in order to attend the party, and Sam then offers Charlie a lift to his friend Tommy’s place.
