A descendent of Abraham Van Helsing, a Dutch physician who practised in the 19th century, Matthew Van Helsing owns an antique shop in London that was constructed in 2000 on the former site of Carfax Abbey. In the middle of the night, when Van Helsing was sleeping upstairs, his secretary, Solina, let a gang of thieves inside the business. Her lover Marcus was in charge of the gang.

After breaking into the store’s underground high-security vault, the thieves discover a silver coffin that is locked shut and protected by a lethal defensive mechanism. Solina and Marcus come to the conclusion, based on the level of protection that is surrounding the coffin, that the casket must hold important content. As a result, they resolve to escape with the coffin and run to New Orleans. As soon as Van Helsing learns that the coffin has been taken, he boards a plane bound for the United States and instructs his apprentice, Simon Sheppard, to stay behind in London. Simon chooses to go along with his tutor in spite of these instructions.
