Professor Von Helsing is taken into custody by two Whitby police officers, Sergeant Wilkes and Constable Albert, just after he has successfully vanquished Count Dracula. He is transported to Scotland Yard, where he tells Sir Basil Humphrey that he did, in fact, kill Count Dracula, but that this cannot be deemed murder because the count had already been dead for over 500 years. Instead of retaining the services of an attorney, he seeks the assistance of a psychiatrist, Dr. Jeffrey Garth, who was previously one of his most promising students.

After leaving the Whitby jail, Sergeant Wilkes travels to the train station, where he is scheduled to meet an officer from Scotland Yard. In the meantime, Countess Marya Zaleska, Dracula’s daughter, sneaks into the jail and hypnotizes Albert with the jeweled ring she is wearing. With the assistance of her manservant Sandor, she steals Dracula’s body from the Whitby goal, and then, after throwing salt on the pyre, she ritualistically burns Dracula’s body in an effort to break the curse that has made her a vampire. On the other hand, Sandor quickly starts to put her down, telling her that all she sees in her reflection is “death.” She eventually gives in to her hunger for blood and drinks it.

The Countess picks up where she left off with her hunts, lulling her prey into submission with her ornate jeweled ring. The Countess approaches Dr. Garth at a social gathering where they happened to have a chance encounter and asks for his assistance in overcoming the influence that she feels from those who have passed on. She is given the advice by the physician to overcome her desires by addressing them, and after hearing this, the Countess begins to have hope that her willpower, combined with the scientific knowledge of Dr. Garth, will be sufficient to vanquish Dracula’s malevolence.
