Anna Khitrova, a midwife, working in a hospital in London, discovers a Russian diary on Tatiana’s body, a teenage girl who passes away during childbirth. Khitrova also discovers a calling card for the Trans-Siberian Restaurant, owned by Semyon, an old iron in the Russian mafia.

Tatiana’s death is the catalyst for the events that follow. Anna embarks on a mission to locate Tatiana’s family so that she can find a new family for the baby. Along the way, she runs into Semyon, who offers his assistance. Helen, Anna’s mother, is receptive to the idea; however, Anna’s Russian uncle Stepan, a former KGB officer, cautions against it, noting that Tatiana was a prostitute. Helen, Anna’s mother, is open to the notion. In addition to the diary, Anna offers Semyon a photocopy of it.

Nikolai Luzhin, Semyon’s driver, also performs the duties of “cleaner” for the family and acts as Kirill, Semyon’s sonbodyguard. ,’s Kirill, who is an alcoholic and has disappointed Semyon on multiple occasions, gives the go-ahead for an ill-advised hit on a rival Chechen leader with the assistance of a Kurdish acquaintance named Azim.
