The opening sequence of the film takes place in Bangkok, which is located in Thailand. Sam Sei (Anthony Wong), a close friend of Gou Fei (Chow Yun-fat), takes out a loan from a loan shark in order to pay for an appropriate burial for Gou Fei’s deceased mother. Sam is taken hostage by the loan shark, but Gou Fei is able to save him by confronting the loan shark and convincing him to extend the period of time during which Sam is required to repay the loan.

Gou Fei punches two of the members of the gang before engaging in a knife battle with the remaining members of the gang. The loan shark does not agree with Gou Fei’s demands and instructs his associates to kill Sam. After doing so, the loan shark makes an effort to shoot Gou Fei, but Gou Fei is able to grab the gun away from the loan shark, so allowing Sam Sei to be freed and allowing him to leave. Gou Fei and Sam Sei are forced to leave the city because the loan shark has threatened to kill them so that he will not lose face.
