The Protestant Confederation of American Natives, led by William “Bill the Butcher” Cutting, and the Irish Catholic immigrant Dead Rabbits, led by “Priest” Vallon, engage in their final battle in the slum of the Five Points in the year 1846 to determine which faction will hold sway over the territory. The outcome of this conflict will determine which faction will hold sway over the territory. At the conclusion of the conflict, Bill puts an end to Vallon’s life and then announces that the Dead Rabbits are illegal. After seeing what happened, Vallon’s son, who was just a child at the time, hid the knife that had been used to kill his father and was transferred to an orphanage on Blackwell’s Island.

In the year 1862, Amsterdam, Vallon’s son, makes his way back to the Five Points in search of retribution and is able to collect the knife. An old friend named Johnny Sirocco introduces him to the local gang clans, all of which pay tribute to Bill, who continues to maintain control of the territory.,
