Maximus was a powerful Roman general held in high esteem by the standard Roman population and the elderly Emperor Marcus Aurelius. A power struggle results in Maximus and his family being sentenced to death after the Emperor decides that Maximus should succeed him as his heir rather than Commodus, the Emperor’s son.

The powerful general is unable to save his family. As a result, he loses the will to live, which leads to his capture and subsequent participation in gladiator games, where he will likely die. Now, the only thing that keeps him going is the hope that one day he will have the opportunity to look into the eyes of the person who will receive his vengeance.
