The Viking settlement of Berk, which is situated on a secluded island, is frequently subjected to attacks by dragons, which result in the loss of animals, damage to property, and risk to human life. It is decided that Hiccup, the awkward son of the village chieftain, Stoick the Vast, who is fifteen years old, is not physically capable of fighting the dragons. Instead, he works as an apprentice to the town blacksmith, Gobber, where he develops mechanical devices; nevertheless, Hiccup’s creations frequently fail to work as intended. Hiccup takes out a Night Fury with the help of a bolas launcher during one of the battles. The Night Fury is a dangerous and uncommon dragon about which very little is known. Because nobody believes him, he has to go looking for the defeated dragon all by himself. In spite of the fact that he finds the dragon in the forest with his net entangled around him, he is unable to bring himself to kill him and instead releases him free.

Stoick gathers a fleet with the intention of locating the dragons’ lair and putting a stop to the threat they pose once and for all. Before he goes, he enrols Hiccup in a dragon-fighting class alongside the other youths, Fishlegs, Snotlout, the twins Ruffnut and Tuffnut, and Astrid, a fierce Viking girl on whom Hiccup has a crush. The lesson is instructed by Gobber. Hiccup goes to the forest after being unsuccessful in his training and discovers that the Night Fury is still there. The Night Fury is confined to a cove and is unable to fly because Hiccup’s bolas accidently tore off half of his tail fin. Hiccup befriends the dragon over time by feeding it fish and naming him “Toothless” in reference to the dragon’s ability to hide his teeth when threatened. Hiccup builds a harness rig and a prosthetic fin for Toothless in order to make up for the fact that he crippled the dragon’s ability to fly. However, the dragon can only fly while Hiccup is riding it and operating the prosthetic.
