Riley, a little girl, possesses a mind that is home to the fundamental feelings that govern her behavior. These feelings include joy, sadness, fear, disgust, and anger. Her experiences are converted into memories, which are then kept in the form of colored orbs and are transferred into her long-term memory each night. The form of five floaty islands is incorporated into the characteristics of her personality that correspond to the five “core memories” that are considered to be the most significant. Joy takes the role of leader, and she and the other emotions work together to lessen the impact that Sadness has on the group.

Riley uproots her life and goes from Minnesota to San Francisco when she is 11 years old, following her father to his new work. The new house is small and old, her father spends very little time with her, a local pizza parlor serves only pizza topped with broccoli, which Riley does not like, and the moving van that contains their belongings ends up in Texas and won’t arrive for weeks. All of these things contribute to her initially having a negative experience: the new house is crowded and old; her father spends very little time with her; a local pizza parlor serves only pizza topped with broccoli; and so on.

On Riley’s first day at her new school, Sadness retrospectively transforms joyful memories into sadness, which causes Riley to cry in front of her class and produces a sad core memory. Sadness also causes Riley’s mother to grieve in front of her daughter. Joy makes an effort to get rid of it by using a vacuum tube, but in the process of fighting Sadness, she accidentally knocks the other core memories loose, which causes the personality islands to become inoperable. The feelings of happiness and sadness, along with the fundamental memories, are extracted from Headquarters.
