Mitsuha Miyamizu is a young woman who is enrolled in high school in the Japanese prefecture of Itomori in the year 2013. She is so sick of the town that she hopes that in her next incarnation she would be a boy living in Tokyo. One day, for some reason, she starts exchanging bodies with Taki Tachibana, a teenage male who attends high school in Tokyo. This strange phenomenon continues for some time. Therefore, when they wake up as each other on certain mornings, they are forced to participate in the other’s respective activities and social interactions throughout the course of the day. They discover that they can communicate with one another by writing notes on paper, leaving messages on phones, and even writing on each other’s flesh at times.

While Mitsuha is inhabiting Taki’s body, she arranges a date for Taki with Miki Okudera, one of Taki’s coworkers, while Taki, inhabiting Mitsuha’s body, is responsible for Mitsuha’s rise to popularity at school. One day, Taki, who is currently inhabiting Mitsuha’s body, travels with Mitsuha’s grandmother Hitoha and younger sister Yotsuha to the Shinto shrine that is located on a mountaintop outside of the town with the intention of leaving an offering of the ritual alcohol kuchikamizake that was made by the sisters. It is thought to be the physical representation of the village guardian god, who rules over human ties and the passage of time. In the note that Taki finds from Mitsuha, the latter discusses the comet Tiamat, which is forecast to come closest to Earth on the day of the fall festival. The next day, Taki wakes up in his body and goes on a date with Miki. At the end of the evening, Miki tells Taki that she loved the date but that she can tell he is thinking about someone else and that she finds this distracting. As the body-switching comes to an end, Taki makes an effort to call Mitsuha on the phone but is unable to connect with her.
