Will, a veteran of the Iraq War who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, lives in an old-growth forest park close to Portland, Oregon, with his daughter Tom, who is 13 years old. They live in seclusion, relying on their knowledge of how to survive in the forest, and only sometimes venture into the town in search of food and supplies.

Will gets his money by selling the benzodiazepines that were supplied to him by the VA to other veterans. Tom and his companion are taken into custody by social services and park rangers after being found in the woods by a jogger who was looking for Tom.

After being evaluated, it is determined that Tom is educationally advanced for her age despite the fact that she has never attended school. In exchange for Will’s labor on the farm, they are provided with a house to reside in on a Christmas tree farm located in the rural area of Oregon. Will starts the job of packaging trees despite his reluctance, but he is distracted by the helicopters that are employed to transfer them.
