Cockroaches in New York City are the vector for the fatal “Strickler’s illness,” which has been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of the city’s children. Dr. Peter Mann, the deputy director of the CDC, recruits Dr. Susan Tyler, an entomologist because the CDC has been unable to find a treatment for the sickness or create a vaccination against it. In response, Dr.

Tyler uses genetic engineering to create what she refers to as the “Judas breed.” This “Judas breed” is a hybrid between a mantis and a termite that secretes an enzyme that speeds up the roaches’ metabolism. As a result, the roaches burn calories more quickly than they can nourish themselves, and as a result, they die of starvation. The roaches that were transporting the sickness are eliminated with relative ease, and Peter and Susan eventually get married.
