When Danny Kowalski, then five years old and played by Cory Buck, rings the doorbell at the Swan home on Thanksgiving Day in 1973, the narrative officially kicks off. Grace (Brenda Blethyn) and her family are friends of Danny’s family, so he went there with his military doctor father to pay them a visit. While they are there, Grace goes into labor with her fourth child, which she had been expecting for quite some time. Because there is no chance that the baby will hold out until they get to the hospital, Danny’s dad will have to deliver the child.

The father is concerned that he may not be able to reach in and disentangle the umbilical cord because he has been drinking wine all day long on Thanksgiving and it has become tangled. In order to untangle the chord from around the baby’s neck, Danny is instructed to use his tiny hands. The baby girl is given the name Anna by Grace after she is born. Danny is completely taken aback by the entire incident, and he exclaims with joy, “I’m going to marry her!” Grace smiles thoughtfully while the rest of the group laughs at him.
