16 Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)

Winston Smith, the protagonist of the 1984 novel, leads a miserable life in the totalitarian superstate of Oceania, where he is constantly monitored by the Thought Police. The novel is set in a dystopian future. He lives in London, which is the capital city of the territory of Airstrip One, which was formerly England, and he works in a small office cubicle at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history as dictated by the Party and its supreme leader, Big Brother, who never appears publicly but instead appears only on propaganda posters, advertising billboards, and television monitors. His job involves rewriting history as the Party and Big Brother want it to be written.

Aside from that, he periodically shows up at public rallies in Victory Square, where the locals are shown propaganda films on the current state of the war, as well as contradictory and fabricated news items about Oceania’s military campaign to unite the civilised globe under Big Brother’s authority. Winston, who is plagued by traumatic childhood memories and restless sexual cravings, writes a secret diary of his private thoughts, thereby creating evidence of his thoughtcrime, whilst his coworker and neighbour, Parsons, appears content to follow the laws of the state. However, in order to prevent the telescreens from exposing him, he makes an effort to carry it out in secret.
