Each is co-piloted by two or more individuals who, in order to share the mental load of piloting the machine, create a mental link with one another through a process known as “drifting.”

In the year 2020, brothers Yancy and Raleigh Becket pilot the American Jaeger known as Gipsy Danger in order to protect Anchorage from a Category 3 Kaiju that has been given the codename “Knifehead.” During the conflict, the Kaiju inadvertently pierces the Jaeger’s armour, ripping away its left arm and half of its head. This causes the Jaeger to pull Yancy out of the Conn Pod, which ultimately results in Yancy’s death. Raleigh, despite being in control of a severely damaged Jaeger by himself, manages to take out Knifehead and bring Gipsy safely to land before passing out.
