The story focuses on Mimiko (), a brilliant young girl who is abandoned by her grandmother when the latter travels to attend a memorial service for Mimiko’s grandfather in Nagasaki. After visiting a few neighbourhood shops, Mimiko returns to her home in a bamboo forest, where she discovers a newborn panda cub named Panny (sometimes spelled Pan-Chan) sound asleep on the back doorstep.

She instantly became friends with the baby panda and invited him in for a drink after they became fast friends. Soon after, his father, PapaPanda, will arrive for a visit, and after PapaPanda volunteers to be Mimiko’s father, the three of them will decide to start a family (Mimiko never had any parents).

During their first night together, the three begin to acclimate to living in a shared space, while Mimiko sends the first of many letters to her grandmother (who she promised to write to every day).
