In the past, Skipper, Rico, and Kowalski are shown as young penguin brothers living in Antarctica. After noticing that one of their eggs had rolled away from the colony, the three of them went after it, rescued it from leopard seals, and then were cast adrift on an iceberg. After the egg hatches, the three penguins decide to raise the newborn penguin they now call Private as one of their own. In the present, the penguins sneak into Fort Knox to steal some Cheesy Dibbles from a vending machine to celebrate Private’s birthday. Meanwhile, Private is frustrated because he is not acknowledged as an official team member, despite his desire to do so.
The penguins leave Circus Zaragoza to go to Fort Knox. The penguins are subsequently kidnapped and taken to a submarine, where they are confronted by an octopus named Dave. Dave tells the penguins that he used to live in the Central Park Zoo as a star attraction before the penguins stole his thunder with their adorableness. Dave then explains that he now lives in a submarine. A resentful Dave decided to exact his vengeance by disguising himself as the human scientist Dr. Octavius Brine to carry it out. This was after being upstaged by other penguins on multiple occasions and being moved around between zoos and aquariums as an unwanted animal. Before the penguins can get away, Rico ingests a vial of Dave’s bioweapon, the Medusa Serum, and his collection of snow globes.
