A timid romance novelist named Joan Wilder gets a treasure map in the mail from her recently deceased brother-in-law. The map was left to her by her brother-in-law. In the meantime, her sister Elaine was taken hostage in Colombia, and the two thugs who were responsible for the kidnapping demanded that she go to Colombia in order to trade the map for her sister.

After doing so, Joan quickly finds herself lost in the jungle after being tricked by Zolo, a ruthless and corrupt Colombian police officer who will do anything to get his hands on the map. There, she makes the acquaintance of an irreverent soldier-of-fortune by the name of Jack Colton, who offers to accompany her on her journey back to civilized society. They go on an exciting trip together that seems like it was plucked right out of one of Joan’s books.
