The stage actor Guy Woodhouse and his wife Rosemary move into the Bramford, a large Renaissance Revival apartment building in New York City. The Bramford was built in the early 20th century. They choose to ignore the warning that their friend Hutch gave them about the Bramford family’s bloody history involving witchcraft and murder.

Rosemary meets Terry Gionoffrio, a young man who is in the process of recovering from drug addiction and who has been taken in by the elderly neighbors of the Woodhouses, Minnie and Roman Castevet. In the middle of the night, it appears that Terry takes her own life by jumping to her death from the Castevets’ seventh-floor apartment, which causes the Castevets great distress.

A guy ends up becoming quite close to them, but Rosemary finds the couple to be intrusive and annoying. Rosemary receives the pendant that belonged to Terry as a lucky charm from Minnie, who explains that the pendant contains “tennis root.”
