Peter, a social media strategist in Los Angeles, is sick and tired of his entire family asking him about his relationship status whenever he travels to see them for the holidays. Peter is now single. When Tim’s wife hires Peter’s best friend and roommate Nick as a freelance handyman, Peter is delighted to bring his new lover Tim to New Hampshire to meet them. However, he learns that Tim is married when Tim’s wife hires Nick to do some work for her.

Peter, who is inconsolable, manages to get Nick into going to New Hampshire with him and pretending that they are dating while they are there. Before they can make their false relationship public, Peter’s mother, Carole, reveals to him that she has set up a blind date for him with her spinning teacher James. This occurs before they can make their phony relationship public. After persuasion from Carole and Nick, Peter gives in to the pressure and accepts.
