Solomon Kane, an English privateer, is in charge of leading his ship’s crew into battle against the Ottoman defenders of a stronghold town in the year 1600. The conflict takes place in North Africa. Following their victory against the defenders, Kane and his men launch an assault on the fortress, where the majority of the crew is slain by demons.

Kane manages to fight his way into the throne room, but before he can plunder the treasures, he is stopped in his tracks by a formidable demon that calls itself the “Devil’s Reaper.” The demon informs Kane that his soul has been forfeit to Satan as a result of his life of sin. Solomon does not accept his lot in life and decides to escape by jumping out of a window.

After one year has passed, Solomon has made his way back to England where he has taken refuge in a monastery, where he has renounced his violent ways and given his fortune to the Church in the hope of finding redemption. Kane is kicked out of the monastery after the abbot has a prophetic dream about him. While travelling, Kane is attacked by highway bandits who make fun of his commitment to nonviolence and leave him for dead.

The Crowthorns, a Puritan family on their way to the New World from the west, are the ones who discover and care for him. They come across a witch, and the witch puts a mark on Meredith Crowthorn. Later on, they are ambushed by minions of the wicked sorcerer Malachi, who kill Meredith’s father and brothers and take Meredith hostage. Kane decides to break his vows and makes a solemn oath to save Meredith.
