In the year 2004, Sergeant First Class William James was assigned to his new position as the team leader of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit serving the United States Army in the Iraq War. He takes the position of Staff Sergeant Matthew Thompson, who passed away in Baghdad after being injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). In addition to him, his team consists of Specialist Owen Eldridge and Sergeant J. T. Sanborn.

When James is out and about, he is frequently accosted by a young Iraqi man with the nickname “Beckham.” Beckham is trying to sell James DVDs.
