A young girl with the last name Garcia Rodriguez is picked up from an orphanage in Spain and given the name Laura Garcia Garcia. 30 years later, an adult Laura, played by Belén Rueda, goes back to the abandoned orphanage with her husband, Carlos Sánchez Rivera, played by Fernando Cayo, and their son, Simón, played by Roger Prep. Simón is seven years old.

She is making preparations to reopen the orphanage as a home for children with special needs. Simón asserts that he was good friends with a young boy named Tomás and sketches drawings of Tomás when he was younger donning a sack mask. Benigna Escobedo, played by Montserrat Carulla, is a social worker who comes to the house to inquire about Simón. During her visit, it is revealed that Laura and Carlos adopted Simón and that he is HIV positive. Laura is so irritated by Benigna’s intrusion that she requests the other woman to leave.
