In the year 1995, Luke Glanton works as a motorbike stuntman for a carnival that travels around the country. Luke meets up with his ex-lover Romina Gutierrez in Schenectady. Romina is currently in a relationship with another man named Kofi Kalam. Luke learns that Romina has a kid named Jason, whom he accidentally fathered the previous year but whom Romina never told him about. Luke is shocked to learn that he is the child’s biological father. Luke decides to forego the remainder of the carnival trip in order to remain in Schenectady with Romina and Jason.

Luke finds work as an assistant for the auto mechanic Robin Van Der Hook on a part-time basis. He asks Robin for additional employment, but Robin is unable to legitimately provide it to him. Robin admits that he has a history of robbing banks and recommends that they can carry out a series of heists together. Luke decides to take Robin up on the offer, and in exchange, Robin would let Luke remain in a trailer next to his house. They carry out a number of robberies, including one in which Luke robs a bank while being held at gunpoint, uses his motorcycle to escape, and then rapidly rides it into an unnoticeable box truck driven by Robin.
