Margaret Tate is the executive editor-in-chief of a book publishing company in New York. She is originally from Canada. Her employees dislike her because she has a dominant personality and is always trying to get her way. Margaret finds out from her superior, Chairman Bergen, that her application to renew her visa has been rejected due to a violation of the terms of her visa and that she now faces the possibility of being deported back to Canada.

She does not want to lose her job and her life in New York, so she blackmails her assistant, Andrew Paxton, into marrying her so that she may obtain a green card. She tells Andrew that if she is deported, the work he put in as her assistant will be gone, which will set back his aim of becoming an editor.
