To become the 14th Earl of Gurney, Jack Gurney (Peter O’Toole) must inherit the Earldom from Ralph Gurney (Harry Andrews), the 13th Earl of Gurney (Harry Andrews). It’s no secret that paranoid schizophrenia sufferer Jack believes he is the resurrected Jesus Christ, and he regularly performs song and dance routines as well as sleeping on a cross in order to impress his family and friends. When confronted with disagreeable truths (like his status as the 14th Earl), Jack uses his “galvanized pressure cooker” to make them disappear.

When Sir Charles (William Mervyn) marries him to his mistress, Grace (Carolyn Seymour), in order to produce an heir and put his nephew in an institution, Grace falls in love with Jack and abandons the plan. There’s a new ally for Jack in the form of Sir Charles’ wife Lady Claire (Coral Browne), who despises her husband and befriends Jack out of spite. For her part, she begins having an affair with Jack’s psychiatrist, Dr. Herder (Michael Bryant).
