When intelligent and reserved fifth-grader Scott Smalls and his family relocate to a suburb of Los Angeles in the summer of 1962, his mother pushes him to reach out to others he meets in the new community. He makes an embarrassing attempt to join a group of boys who play baseball every day in a nearby sandlot, but he is humiliated by his inability to catch or throw the ball, and everyone, with the exception of Benny, laughs at him.
