In 1985, following the completion of fruitful research in the Amazon rainforest, Dr. Dennis Alan of Harvard University receives an invitation from Andrew Cassedy, the president of a pharmaceutical company in Boston, to travel to Haiti in order to investigate the case of a man named Christophe who passed away in 1978 but appears to have been resurrected. In order to develop a potent anesthetic, Andrew wants samples of the voodoo medication that was administered to Christophe to be examined.

The goal of this endeavor is to create an effective painkiller. Arriving in Haiti during a time of political upheaval, Dr. Alan is on his way to visit Dr. Marielle Duchamp, who is providing medical care to Christophe. Soon after, Alan would face danger at the hands of Dargent Peytraud, the head of the notorious Tonton Macuse. Peytraud is a formidable witch and a torturer. At the beginning of his voyage to hell, Alan comes to the realization that death is not the end of the story.
