Sergeant Neil Howie flies solo to Summerisle off Scotland’s coast on April 29, 1973. He’s there to follow up on a letter from an anonymous source on Summerisle saying that Rowan Morrison, May Morrison’s 12-year-old daughter, is missing. Rowan’s photo is included. Howie arrives at Summerisle to find simple-minded people who know nothing about Rowan Morrison or the girl in the photo. Mrs. Morrison has a daughter, Myrtle, but not Rowan. Howie believes Rowan lived on the island, but the islanders are hiding her.

The inhabitants’ pagan “religion” relies on procreation as the source of life, he notices. That procreation doesn’t require marriage and flaunts sex in private and public. These ideas clash with Howie’s Christian ideals; he attends church, prays, and takes communion. Lord Summerisle, whose forefathers owned the island decades ago, dictates everything on the island. Howie believes Rowan was murdered to ensure a fruitful apple crop, the island’s principal crop, which failed the previous season. Howie seeks to find out if Rowan was murdered/sacrificed and if there would be another sacrifice on May Day.
