A young girl called Adelaide watches a commercial from the year 1986 for the organization Hands Across America. She becomes separated from her parents while they are on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk at night and finds her way into a funhouse. There, in the house of mirrors, she comes face to face with a person who looks exactly like her. As a direct result of the interaction, she becomes withdrawn from her family and stops speaking.

In subsequent years, Adelaide, now an adult, takes a trip with her family, which consists of her husband Gabriel “Gabe” Wilson, their children Zora and Jason, and Gabriel’s mother.
