A monster is created in the year 1887 in Transylvania by Dr. Victor Frankenstein with the assistance of his assistant Igor and Count Dracula. After Dracula has killed Frankenstein, the monster takes Frankenstein’s body and runs away to a windmill to hide from the angry crowd that has surrounded the castle. The monster is seemingly put to rest after the mob sets fire to the windmill and destroys it. One year later, the monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing visits Notre-Dame de Paris, where he engages in a fight with Mr. Hyde and ultimately kills him. On behalf of the Holy Order, which has safeguarded humanity “since the beginning of time,” Helsing investigates and combats evil. Van Helsing, who has no memory of the time before he was discovered creeping up the steps of a church, has the dual goals of gaining his memories back and receiving forgiveness for his past transgressions.
Van Helsing is tasked with travelling to Transylvania, slaying Dracula, and protecting Anna and Velkan, the last of an ancient Romanian family known as the Valeriouses. This assignment is given to Van Helsing at the headquarters of the Order in Vatican City. Their progenitor made a solemn pledge that his offspring will either vanquish Dracula or suffer all of eternity in purgatory. Anna and Velkan make an effort in Transylvania to kill a werewolf that is under Dracula’s influence; nevertheless, the werewolf ends up falling down a deep river canyon with Velkan.
Van Helsing and Carl, a friar and weapons designer, arrive in a town and join Anna in her fight against Dracula’s brides — Verona, Marishka, and Aleera, ultimately resulting in the death of Marishka. Van Helsing also kills Marishka throughout the course of the battle. During that night, Velkan pays a visit to Anna in order to warn her about Dracula’s intentions; however, he quickly transforms into a werewolf and runs away. Van Helsing and Anna pursue Velkan to Frankenstein’s castle. They discover that Dracula intends to replicate Frankenstein’s experiments in order to bring back to life thousands of his zombie progeny, and that he intends to use Velkan as a conduit for this plot.
