A young woman by the name of Mikako Nagamine (Mika Shinohara in the original Japanese version), Sumi Muto in the Japanese version, and Cynthia Martinez in the English version is enlisted in the United Nations Space Army to fight in a war against a race of aliens known as the Tarsians. These creatures got their name from the Tharsis region of Mars, which is where humans first came into contact with them. Mikako, in her capacity as a Special Agent, operates a massive robotic mecha known as a Tracer as a member of a combat squadron that is stationed aboard the spaceship carrier Lysithea.

During the time that the Lysithea is away from Earth looking for the Tarsians, Mikako’s buddy Noboru Terao (Makoto Shinkai in the original Japanese, Chihiro Suzuki in the Japanese dub, and Adam Colon in the English dub) is left behind on the planet. The two keep in touch with one another despite the vast distance by sending and receiving e-mails on their respective cell phones. The Lysithea moves further and further into space, which causes communications to take an ever-increasing amount of time to reach Noboru on Earth. Eventually, the time gap between their correspondence would stretch years.
