In 1995, Chuck Noland, an executive working as a systems analyst, embarks on a journey around the world to solve efficiency issues at FedEx facilities. He resides in Memphis, Tennessee, with his current girlfriend, Kelly Frears.

The two people have expressed interest in getting married, but Chuck’s hectic schedule makes that impossible. Chuck is called away from his Christmas meal with his family to help address a problem at his place of employment in Malaysia. He is killed when a storm brings down the FedEx cargo plane he is riding in over the Pacific Ocean.
