In 1945, a firebombing decimated most of Kobe, including the home of Seita, a teenager, and Setsuko, his younger sister. They get away unscathed, but their mother suffers serious burns and passes away. Seita tries to make Setsuko happy by keeping the news of their mother’s passing a secret from her, but despite his best efforts, Setsuko eventually discovers the truth. Seita and Setsuko decide to move in with a distant aunt, and Seita digs up the goods he hid before the bombing in order to collect them.
