Clarice Starling, an FBI Special Agent, is being accused for a failed narcotics raid that resulted in Starling shooting and murdering five individuals. This happened a decade after Starling was successful in apprehending the serial killer Jame Gumb. Mason Verger, the lone survivor of the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter, makes contact with Starling.
Lecter has been missing ever since he escaped custody during the Gumb probe. During their time together, Lecter rendered Verger, a wealthy child molester, immobile and deformed him in many ways. Since that time, he has been working on a complicated plan to capture, torture, and ultimately eliminate Lecter. Verger makes use of his riches and political power to have Starling switched to Lecter’s case in the hopes that her involvement will draw Lecter out into the open.
After learning about Starling’s scandal, Lecter writes her a letter and sends it to her. A skin lotion containing ingredients that are only available to a select few shops around the world is the scent that a perfume connoisseur has identified from the letter.
She makes calls to the police departments of the cities in where the stores are located and makes a request for surveillance footage from those departments. Chief Inspector Rinaldo Pazzi is looking into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of a library curator in Florence. Pazzi confronts Lecter, who is acting under the guise of Dr. Fell, the assistant curator and caretaker at the museum.
