A mother reluctantly hands her terrified and recalcitrant son, Thomas, over to the scientist Ava Paige and the other members of the organization WCKD. As part of the research being conducted, Thomas and a number of other orphaned youngsters are herded into a wooded area and placed inside of a walled maze.

A number of years later, shortly after being rescued from the Maze, Thomas and the other surviving Gladers—Teresa, Newt, Minho, Frypan, and Jack—are sent to a facility that is managed by Mr. Janson. He assures them that the facility is a safe haven that will shield them from the “Cranks” and the Flare virus and that it will also offer the necessary supplies. They learn, while in Mr. Janson’s care, that they were not the only Gladers and that in addition to their own maze, many other mazes were built.
