In 2057, the Sun is on its last legs, and Earth is rapidly cooling. Eight international astronauts are aboard the spaceship Icarus II piloting a massive stellar bomb to kickstart the Sun and get back to Earth. Their goal is to kickstart the Sun and then get back to Earth. Icarus II picks up the distress beacon of its predecessor, Icarus I, as it slingshots past Mercury.

Icarus I was the first ship to attempt a mission like this, but it went missing seven years earlier. The proximity of the boat to Mercury prevented its signals from reaching Earth, but it did not prevent Icarus II from being able to intercept them. Cape, the ship’s physicist, suggests to Kaneda, the ship’s captain, that they alter their course and take control of the Icarus I.

He bases this recommendation on the reasoning that having two payloads has a better chance of success than having just one. Mace, the ship’s engineer, is against the deviation because he believes it is dangerous. Trey, the ship’s navigator, calculates and implements a trajectory to intercept Icarus I.

However, he forgets to realign the shields that protect the ship from the Sun, which damages four shield panels. If the damage to the shield panels is not repaired, the boat and all of its crew members will be killed.
