Ephraim Winslow takes a temporary position as a “Wickie” (lighthouse keeper) on a remote island off the coast of New England in the 1890s. He works for a month under the direction of Thomas Wake, who has been the island’s keeper for most of its operational history. Winslow comes across miniature mermaid scrimshaw in his rooms and decides to carry it about in his jacket with him.

Wake makes it clear right away that he is very demanding by giving Winslow progressively difficult tasks to complete, such as emptying chamber pots, painting the lighthouse, and hauling large kerosene containers up the stairs, all while restricting his access to the lantern room. Winslow notices that Wake goes to great lengths to climb the lighthouse in the evenings so that he can strip naked in front of the lamp.

During the time that Winslow is on the island, he starts to have hallucinations of sea monsters and logs floating in the water. He also masturbates to the mermaid that is shown on the scrimshaw. In addition to this, he maintains his participation in Wake’s peculiar ritual and is troubled by a bird with one eye that Wake warns him not to shoot since Wake is of the opinion that gulls are the reincarnations of sailors and that killing one would be unlucky. One evening, while the two are having dinner together, Wake admits to Winslow that his prior wickie passed away after losing his mind, and Winslow reveals that he is a former lumberjack from Canada who is looking for a new line of work.
