Jess hears the doorbell ring just as she is getting ready to take Tommy, her autistic son, on a boat excursion with her friend Greg, but there is no one there to answer it. Jess travels to a Florida harbor without Tommy, explaining that Tommy is at his school for children with special needs, and boards Greg’s boat with his married friends Sally and Downey, Heather, and Victor. Jess also brings up the subject of Tommy’s school for children with special needs.
They are out at sea as a storm is getting closer to them, and they pick up a distress signal. Heather has washed ashore after the storm causes the boat to capsize. After the storm has passed, the other people clamber onto the boat that has capsized. They get on an ocean liner as it is passing by; even though it seems to be empty, the dining area is stocked with freshly prepared meals. Jess has a sense of déjà vu as they explore. They locate Jess’s keys close to a showcase containing a model of Aeolus, the ship’s namesake. Jess becomes aware that someone is observing them, and Victor immediately gives pursuit.
