Kevin Flynn teaches his kid about Tron in 1989. He talks about his buddies and his program emissary CLU. Flynn pledges to take Sam to the Grid, but he vanishes. 20 years later, the Board runs his father’s firm ENCOM, not Flynn. Sam mourns his father’s death and pranks the board. Alan Bradley, his father’s best buddy, informs Sam he got a page at his arcade office. Alan explains to Sam that the phone number has been disconnected for 20 years. Alan still hopes Flynn is alive, so he hands Sam the arcade keys.

Sam discovers his father’s workstation and enters a few numbers to access the Grid. Mistaken for software, he’s subjected to contests until they realize he’s a user. Sam is brought to the head guy he believes is his father, but it’s CLU, who has him fight on a light cycle. Quorra saves Sam and brings him to his father. He informs Sam that CLU turned on him and planned to invade their planet to “repair” its defects, so he closed the gatekeeping himself there, which is why he never returned. Sam wants to go back, but Flynn won’t let CLU carry out his plan. Sam opposes him.
