Hazel Grace Lancaster is a teenager diagnosed with thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. She lives in the suburbs of Indianapolis with her family. Her mother is concerned that her daughter is suffering from clinical depression and encourages her to participate in a cancer patient support group that meets weekly.

There, Hazel runs into Augustus “Gus” Waters, who is attending the support group for his friend Isaac, who has eye cancer. Isaac is receiving treatment for his condition. Bone cancer caused Augustus to lose a leg, but it seems to have gone into remission at this point. The two become close through the shared interest in their pastimes and make a pact to read each other’s preferred works.

Hazel receives The Prince of Dawn from Gus, while Hazel recommends An Imperial Affliction, a novel about a girl named Anna diagnosed with cancer. The story is similar to Hazel’s own experience, but it comes to an unexpected conclusion. Its author, Peter Van Houten, disappeared after the novel was published and has not been seen or heard from since then. Van Houten took refuge in Amsterdam.
