The accomplished open-heart surgery performed by Steven Murphy, a cardiothoracic surgeon in Cincinnati, is now complete. After that, he goes to a diner, where he winds up chatting with a young guy named Martin Lang. After that, he goes back to his house to be with his family, which consists of his wife Anna, their daughter Kimberly (also known as Kim), and their younger son Robert (Bob).

Anna and Steven have sexual encounters while Anna acts as though she is under the influence of general anesthesia. Martin is invited to the Murphy household for dinner, and Kim appears to be developing feelings for him. After some time has passed, Steven reveals to Anna that Martin’s father passed away in a car accident ten years ago and that he has taken an interest in Martin in order to assist him in coping with the loss of his parent.

Martin shows his appreciation by extending an invitation to dinner at his mother’s house to Steven. Following the meal, Steven makes an effort to leave, but Martin prevents him and insists that he watch the movie with them all. Martin leaves in the middle of it, and Steven’s mother makes an intimate move on him by complimenting his hands and then kissing them. Steven dismisses her quickly and then heads back home.

Martin’s demands on Steven’s time become more frequent and urgent over the course of the next few days, but Steven does not respond to Martin’s requests. Bob wakes up one day to discover that he has lost the ability to feel his legs because he has become paralyzed. Steven and Anna hurriedly took him to the emergency room, where doctors determined that there was nothing physically wrong with him.
